Presty the DJ for Aug. 27

We begin with an interesting anniversary: Today in 1965, the Beatles used the final day of their five-day break from their U.S. tour to attend a recording session for the Byrds and to meet Elvis Presley at Presley’s Beverly Hills home.

The group reportedly found Presley “unmagnetic,” about which John Lennon reportedly said, “Where’s Elvis? It was like meeting Engelbert Humperdinck.”

Last night in 1970, Eric Clapton and some musicians he’d hired to put together an album — a group called Derek and the Dominos — attended an Allman Brothers concert in Miami. After the concert, Clapton invited the band, including guitar player Duane Allman, back to the studio for an all-night jam session. Allman then asked to watch the Dominos’ recording sessions. Clapton said if you’re going to watch, you’re going to play. And so became “Layla” …

… “and Other Assorted Love Songs.”
